Took the Jeep with the tent attached for a weekend out in the woods. It started off as a great adventure—getting the setup dialed in, enjoying the crisp evening air, and just disconnecting. Everything was perfect until the air mattress decided to lose air. I ended up waking up flat on the hard cargo floor at about 4:00 AM. Nothing quite like the cold ground to wake you up before the sun!
Exploring Fort Yargo State Park
Despite the early wake-up call, Fort Yargo in Winder, Georgia is an incredible place to spend the weekend. The park is famous for its extensive 21-mile trail system, which caters heavily to both hikers and mountain bikers. Once the sun finally came up, hitting the trails was the perfect remedy for a rough night of sleep.
"There’s something about the Georgia clay and the quiet of the morning that makes the early wake-up completely worth it."
The Trail System
If you're visiting, the trail network has a little bit of everything:
- The Blue Trail: This is a 13-mile, mostly single-track loop that follows the outer boundary of the park. It’s a mountain bike favorite, featuring climbs, creek crossings, and technical sections with intimidating names like "Heart Attack Hill" and "Monster Mile."
- The Yellow Trail (Lake Loop): A beautiful 7-mile loop right around the lake. It's much more moderate and perfect for a scenic hike or trail run.
Next time, I'll definitely be double-checking the air mattress valve before going to sleep. But even with the 4:00 AM wake up, having these trails right outside the tent made it a trip to remember.
